On a hillside terrace overlooking valleys to the north, east and west, the ruins of Balleen Castle tell a complex story of medieval power and later decline.

Castle, Balleen Little, Co. Kilkenny

This multi-period fortress once consisted of an ancient keep connected to a tall square building by a long hall, with the medieval church of Balleen standing just 100 metres to the south. The keep, likely dating from the 15th century, stood as ruins until one Twelfth Night around 1875 when it dramatically collapsed, leaving only its basement storey. According to historical records, the site was among the principal residences in County Kilkenny by 1596, with Richard, third Viscount Mountgarret, making it his preferred residence over Ballyragget in the early 17th century.

The surviving structures reveal fascinating architectural details from different periods. The earlier circular tower, possibly dating to 1455 according to a datestone once visible above a window, was later incorporated into a 17th-century rectangular tower built onto its exterior. This six-storey tower, constructed of limestone rubble, featured mullioned and transomed windows; evidence of its sophistication despite walls only about two feet thick. The 1647 additions by Viscount Mountgarret included ornate features, though local tradition suggests the building works were never completed. By 1655-6, the Down Survey parish map was already depicting it as ‘a decayed stone house’.

Today, visitors can still trace the castle’s complex layout through its remaining walls and foundations. The north tower shows evidence of a wall oven and window embrasures, whilst the southwest rectangular tower preserves traces of fireplaces and multiple floor levels, though much has collapsed into rubble-filled chambers. The site once included a circular bawn wall with a gatehouse featuring an ornate double-gate, though this has largely vanished. What remains is a haunting reminder of the castle’s former grandeur; its walls still bearing witness to centuries of habitation, modification, and eventual abandonment in this scenic corner of Kilkenny.
