The five-storey rectangular tower, measuring 7.9 metres east to west and 9.2 metres north to south, occupies the southeast corner of what was once a formidable square enclosure. This bawn, essentially a defensive courtyard wall that protected the tower and its inhabitants, forms an almost perfect square measuring just over 30 metres on each side.

The site represents a typical example of the tower houses that dotted the Irish landscape from the 15th to the 17th centuries, built by both Gaelic Irish and Anglo-Norman families as fortified residences. These structures served dual purposes; they were both comfortable homes for the local gentry and defensive strongholds during turbulent times. The positioning of the tower at the corner of the bawn, rather than centrally, was a common defensive strategy that allowed defenders to cover two walls simultaneously whilst providing maximum protection to the residential quarters.

Today, the site stands as entry number CO024-135001 in Cork’s archaeological inventory, having been formally documented in the comprehensive survey of North Cork’s archaeological heritage published in 2000. While time has taken its toll on the structure, the remaining stonework offers visitors a tangible connection to centuries of Irish history, from medieval clan conflicts through to the plantation era and beyond.
