Castle, Ballykine Lower, Co. Mayo

Built into the eastern slope of a rocky ridge and surrounded by dense woodland, the castle at Ballykine Lower in County Mayo represents a fascinating example of medieval defensive architecture that evolved over several centuries.

The original structure was a fortified house, constructed on a carefully chosen terrace that provided both natural protection and commanding views over the surrounding landscape. This initial building contained two ground floor rooms; a larger northern chamber measuring 4.2m by 5.2m that was once covered by a stone vault, and a smaller southern room of 2.1m by 5.2m, separated by a load-bearing wall that supported the vaulted ceiling above.

The house underwent significant defensive improvements over time, most notably the addition of a three-storey tower house attached to its southern gable. The tower’s ground floor served as a basement storage area, whilst the first floor connected directly to the main house through an internal doorway. The second floor features an ingenious design element: both the internal and external walls were corbelled, or gradually projected outward, to create space for a mural staircase leading to the defensive wall-walk above. The main house itself was enhanced with its own defensive features, including mural stairs built into the western wall that provided access to the first floor and an upper wall-walk.

The castle’s eastern wall showcases particularly interesting architectural details, with three buttresses connected by two wickerwork-centred arches that support both a wall-walk and protective parapet. The main chamber was well lit for its time, featuring large arched windows in both the north and south gables, complemented by smaller rectangular windows on the other walls. Evidence of the building’s complex history can be seen in various blocked doorways, including entrances at either end of the northern room, and a later entrance that was constructed directly in front of the original ground floor doorway, suggesting changing security needs and usage patterns throughout the castle’s occupation.
