Castle, Ballymore, Co. Tipperary South

Perched on elevated farmland with commanding views across the countryside, the ruins of Ballymore Castle tell a tale of centuries of Irish history.

Castle, Ballymore, Co. Tipperary South

What remains today is a single-storey rectangular limestone structure, its walls built from roughly coursed rubble with distinctive hammer-dressed quoin stones. The most intact portion is the southeast wall, which rises to first-floor level at about 4.5 metres, whilst the southwest wall survives only partially. The castle’s impressive base-batter and 2.5-metre-thick walls hint at its medieval origins, though the construction techniques suggest it was built or significantly modified during the 15th or 16th century.

Historical records from the Civil Survey of 1654-6 reveal that the castle was owned by Edmond Magrath in 1640, who had previously leased it to Greenvil and Dorothy Halls in 1638. By 1653, it had passed to Anthony Shercliffe of Cregg in County Cork. At that time, the property was described as “one small Pyle or Castle in good repaire with two thatcht houses and tenn Cabbyns”, indicating it was still a functioning estate complex. The lands themselves were noted as the ancient inheritance of Redmond Magrath of Thurlesbegg, suggesting the site had been in the family for generations.

Today, the castle stands within a 19th-century farmyard, about 700 metres from Ballymore church. Time and repurposing have taken their toll; a corrugated iron shed now sits atop the remaining walls, and the interior was excavated to a depth of two metres when it served as a silage pit. Despite these modifications, architectural details remain visible, including a flat-headed window at ground level and remnants of another window on the first floor. Nearby, a 19th-century outhouse incorporates dressed stonework salvaged from the castle, displaying the punch-dressed tooling characteristic of 16th-century craftsmanship, offering tantalising glimpses of the structure’s former grandeur.
