On a terrace overlooking the gently rising ground about 80 metres north of the Awbeg River stands the impressive remains of Ballinamona Castle.

Castle, Ballynamona, Co. Cork

This rectangular four-storey tower, measuring 11.6 metres east to west and 8.2 metres north to south, once connected to a 19th-century country house on its north side, though the house has since been entirely demolished. The tower’s north wall shows considerable alteration from its original form, particularly where fireplaces were inserted into the outside face at ground and first-floor levels during later modifications.

The castle’s defensive architecture reveals sophisticated military planning typical of early 17th-century construction. Entry is through a pointed arch doorway on the east wall, complete with a yett hole through the northern jamb for securing a heavy iron gate. Inside, a vaulted lobby with a murder hole overhead leads to a small guard room and the base of spiral stairs in the southeast corner. The ground floor’s main chamber features slit windows in the south wall and a central window on the west side with an ogee-headed light flanked by gun loops. Particularly notable are the distinctive gable-shaped gun loops positioned centrally on each external wall face, with the south face featuring a smaller loop flanked by recessed right-angled gun loops; a design closely paralleled at nearby Raheen and Carrignacurra castles, both built around 1590.

The upper floors housed the main living quarters, accessed via the spiral staircase that originally rose through all four storeys. The second-floor chambers feature elegant double ogee-headed windows with hood mouldings, whilst the third-floor attic extends over the area occupied by mural chambers below. Defensive features include bartizans atop the northeast and southwest corners and a box machicolation positioned high above the entrance door. This was the seat of the Nagle family, who continued to reside here well into the 19th century. Cartographic evidence suggests the castle dates to the early 17th century, and intriguingly, a Sheela-na-Gig was discovered here in the 19th century, though it has since been lost.
