This rectangular fortified house, measuring 18.5 metres north to south and 5.85 metres east to west, rises dramatically from sheer rock faces on three sides, with only the eastern approach offering level ground. Built by the O’Driscoll clan, likely on the site of an earlier castle, this unusual structure represents a fascinating blend of traditional Irish tower house design with early 17th century architectural innovations.

The building rises two storeys with an attic level, though repairs carried out in the 1920s have obscured some original features with concrete. The ground floor entrance sits in the eastern wall, with what may be a first floor doorway above, though its poor preservation makes this uncertain. The first floor windows showcase particularly fine stonework, set in square embrasures with dressed stone surrounds and segmental arched heads featuring roll moulding along the inner edges. The window lights display elegant ogee heads in single, double, and triple configurations, divided by stone transoms and topped with hood mouldings that terminate in decorative horns. Three fireplaces warm the first floor, with the largest, positioned in the north wall, incorporating a bread oven on its eastern side; its flue projects visibly from the eastern gable.

Defence was clearly a priority for the builders, as evidenced by the bartizan, a small turret with gun loops, crowning the southwest corner. Archaeological investigations in 1998 and 2002 have revealed additional details about the site, including what may be the remains of a bawn wall, now completely covered in ivy, extending eastward from the northeast corner of the castle. This defensive wall would have originally enclosed a courtyard area, providing additional protection for the inhabitants and their livestock.
