Castle, Clashacrow, Co. Kilkenny

Castle, Clashacrow, Co. Kilkenny

On a gentle ridge along the eastern bank of the Arigna River, where it meets the Nuenna valley, once stood a castle that has long since vanished from the landscape.

The site sits in what is now pasture land, with the ground rising sharply to the east whilst offering sweeping views across both river valleys to the highlands beyond. Historical records from the early 20th century place this lost stronghold about 300 yards north of a local church, in what was once known as the “castle field”.

The antiquarian Daniel Carrigan noted the location of this demolished castle in 1905, and by 1900 the Ordnance Survey maps showed only a mound remaining at the site, measuring roughly 30 metres north to south and 26 metres east to west. The earthwork tapered towards its southern end, with a distinctive scarp on its western side that continued southward for another 30 metres or so. Another scarp, about 22 metres long, was recorded on the northern side, dropping away towards the river below.

Today, the land has been thoroughly reclaimed for agriculture, and no trace of either the castle or its mound can be seen at ground level. What was once a defensive position controlling the river crossing has been absorbed back into the countryside, its story preserved only in old maps and the memories embedded in the field’s traditional name. The site serves as a reminder of how completely even substantial medieval structures can disappear from the Irish landscape, leaving behind only documentary evidence and the faintest of earthwork traces.
