Castle, Grange, Co. Sligo

In the northeast corner of a garden behind a house in Grange, County Sligo, the remnants of what was once marked as 'Castle' on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map tell a story of lost grandeur.

Castle, Grange, Co. Sligo

Today, visitors will find little more than a low mound of rubble, measuring roughly 10 metres square and rising just 30 centimetres above the surrounding ground. Whether this modest pile of stones actually derives from the original castle structure remains uncertain, though the site’s level ground suggests the building was deliberately demolished rather than simply left to decay.

The most intriguing surviving element of this vanished castle isn’t found at the site itself, but rather built into a nearby deserted post-medieval house. An ogee headed window, a distinctive architectural feature with its elegant S-shaped curve typical of late medieval construction, has been incorporated into the southeast-facing gable wall. This repurposed window offers the only tangible glimpse of what the castle might have looked like in its heyday, suggesting a structure of some refinement rather than a simple defensive tower.

The castle’s appearance on the 1837 map indicates it was still recognisable as a significant structure in the early 19th century, though by then it may have already been in ruins. Its complete levelling sometime after this date speaks to the common fate of many Irish castles; their stones recycled for field walls, houses and farm buildings as the old Gaelic order gave way to new agricultural practices and settlement patterns. Today, this quiet corner of a Sligo garden holds only the faintest echo of its castellated past, a reminder of how thoroughly time and human activity can erase even the most substantial buildings.
