On the western side of the Ketragh River glen in County Cork stands Castle Magner, a fragmentary reminder of medieval power and fortification.

The ruins consist of a rectangular bawn measuring approximately 42 metres north to south and 38 metres east to west, with a much deteriorated central tower at its heart. Today, the site serves as a working farmyard, complete with a two-storey farmhouse that sits just northeast of the tower, though the house itself has long been abandoned.

The tower’s southeast corner remains the most intact feature, rising to its original height and displaying a distinctive D-shaped extension on its exterior. Inside this curved section, a circular chamber once housed a spiral wooden staircase that provided access to all four floors of the tower through doorways with stone surrounds; some featured lintelled openings whilst others had pointed arches. The top of this corner wall features continuous machicolation supported by ten corbels, a defensive feature that allowed defenders to drop projectiles on attackers below. Whilst much of the main block has crumbled into an overgrown pile of rubble, portions of the south and east walls survive, and a 19th-century pamphlet recorded the castle as being 56 feet high with one round tower and a battery.

The bawn walls show varying degrees of preservation, with the northern side being the most complete, stretching about 20 metres from the northeast corner and containing blocked window lights and one rectangular window with its mullion and hood moulding still visible. Over the centuries, parts of the bawn walls have been incorporated into farm buildings; the northern and eastern walls once formed part of an 18th-century house, later replaced by a gable-ended farm building, whilst other agricultural structures in the southwest and northwest corners also made use of the original medieval walls. The castle belonged to the Magner family, who served as followers and tenants of the Barrys, until it was forfeited in the mid-17th century and subsequently granted to the Brettridge family.
