Castle – motte and bailey, Dunnamona, Co. Westmeath

In the gently rolling pastures of County Westmeath stands National Monument No. 560, a formidable earthen mound that once formed part of a medieval motte and bailey castle at Dunnamona.

This imposing circular motte rises steeply from the surrounding fields, its almost flat top measuring approximately 30 metres northwest to southeast and 21 metres northeast to southwest. Built on a natural rise in the landscape, the monument commands sweeping views across the countryside in all directions, a strategic position that would have been invaluable to its medieval builders. The western side of the mound reveals intriguing mortared stone masonry, likely medieval in origin, which appears to have been added as a rough facing or wall. A ledge at the base of this stonework suggests the motte’s side was deliberately scarped to accommodate the construction.

Archaeological surveys conducted throughout the 1970s have revealed a complex of earthworks surrounding the main motte, though time and agricultural activity have obscured many features. To the northwest and west, traces of banks along the edges of old quarry workings may indicate the location of the original bailey, whilst a series of low banks and scarps extend southward from the motte itself. Southwest of the main monument lies a sub-oval enclosure bounded by a low bank on a scarp, divided by a wide bank running northwest to southeast. Further south, a large circular enclosure sits on lower ground, bounded by earthen banks with remnants of a shallow fosse visible on its north, northwest and southern sides.

The entire area bears the marks of centuries of human activity; old cultivation ridges cross the landscape, and modern field drains cut through the ancient earthworks. Quarrying has disturbed portions of the site, particularly on the northwest and southeast sides of the motte and the southern section of its summit. Local tradition adds another layer to the site’s history, with the earthwork in the triangular corner of the townland to the west of Dunnamona being known as a churchyard. Despite these alterations and the passage of time, the monument remains an impressive testament to medieval power and engineering, its earthen bulk still dominating the Westmeath landscape as it has for centuries.
