Castle – motte and bailey, Racraveen, Co. Cavan

The medieval motte and bailey castle at Racraveen in County Cavan occupies a strategic position at a bend in a wide river that curves around the northeastern half of the site.

The rest of the fortification was once protected by a broad, shallow defensive ditch, though this fosse is now only visible along the southeastern, southern, and west-northwestern sections. These earthworks represent a classic example of Norman military architecture in Ireland, likely dating from the 12th or 13th century when such fortifications were rapidly constructed across the country.

The motte itself is an impressive earthen mound, rising between 3 and 5.75 metres high with a steep-sided, oval base measuring approximately 38 metres northwest to southeast and 27 metres northeast to southwest. The flat summit, which measures 32.4 by 23.3 metres, is surrounded by the remnants of a low earthen bank that once provided additional defence. Archaeological evidence reveals the foundations of a rectangular stone building on top, with internal dimensions of roughly 8 metres east to west and 6 metres north to south; likely the remains of a stone keep or tower. A break in the bank on the southwestern side, complete with an accompanying causeway, marks the original entrance to the fortification.

Historical records suggest this may be the site of a castle belonging to the Nugent family, as noted by historian Davies in 1947. The Nugents were prominent Anglo-Norman settlers who held considerable lands in County Cavan from the medieval period onwards. Traces of what might have been a rectangular bailey can still be detected to the southwest of the motte, where the castle’s garrison and associated buildings would have stood. This lower courtyard area would have housed the everyday activities of castle life; stables, workshops, and living quarters for soldiers and servants.
