In the gently rolling pastures of North Tipperary sits an intriguing archaeological site at Rathfalla that tells a layered story of medieval fortification.

Castle - motte and bailey, Rathfalla, Co. Tipperary North

What appears today as a circular raised area some 20 metres across, surrounded by earthworks and ditches, likely began life as an Irish ringfort before being adapted centuries later into a Norman motte and bailey castle. The site spans nearly 55 metres from northeast to southwest, with its most prominent feature being a small circular mound in the northwest quadrant that rises about 2.5 metres high; this would have served as the motte, the defensive stronghold of the Norman fortification.

The earthworks reveal considerable engineering effort, with a broad internal fosse, or defensive ditch, measuring about 11.5 metres wide encircling the central area. Beyond this lies a flat terrace bordered by an outer bank that still stands nearly two metres high on its exterior face, accompanied by another substantial flat-bottomed ditch some 7.6 metres wide. Traces of stone revetment remain visible along the northern and western sections of the outer ditch’s counterscarp, suggesting the defences were once reinforced with stonework. Bulldozing activity in recent decades, while damaging gaps in the outer bank, unexpectedly revealed a small stone-lined chamber beneath the northern section, oriented east to west and measuring roughly 1.2 metres in length; its purpose remains unclear.

Today, a modern house occupies the southeastern portion of the site, incorporating the ancient earthworks into its landscaped garden. While this has altered some of the original features, the essential character of this dual-purpose fortification remains readable in the landscape. The modification of what was likely an earlier Irish ringfort to accommodate a Norman motte represents a common pattern of cultural overlay seen throughout Ireland, where successive waves of inhabitants adapted existing defensive structures to their own military traditions and needs.
