This impressive motte, a type of fortification introduced to Ireland by the Anglo-Normans in the late 12th century, forms part of a larger castle complex that has evolved over centuries. The mound’s northeastern to southeastern edges are defined by the stone curtain walls of the later castle structure, though these subsequent developments make it impossible to determine the motte’s original full extent.

The relationship between the motte and the castle built upon it tells a familiar story of medieval Irish fortification. Initially, these artificial mounds would have supported a wooden tower or palisade, providing a defensive stronghold that could be constructed relatively quickly as the Normans established their presence across the Irish midlands. Over time, as settlements became more permanent and resources allowed, many of these temporary wooden structures were replaced with stone castles, as happened here at Dalgan.

Today, the site presents a palimpsest of defensive architecture, with the original earthwork partially obscured but still clearly visible beneath and around the later stone constructions. The Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly, first published in 1997, continues to serve as the primary reference for understanding this site, though ongoing research occasionally provides new insights into how these overlapping phases of fortification worked together to create the complex we see today.
