Castle – motte, Moatpark, Co. Kilkenny

Halfway down a gentle northeast slope on the eastern bank of the River Nore sits an impressive medieval earthwork that may be the lost castle of Tullabarry, a 12th or 13th century fortification mentioned in historical records.

Castle - motte, Moatpark, Co. Kilkenny

The monument consists of a massive pudding bowl shaped mound, roughly 50 metres across at its base and rising about 5.5 metres high. At its summit, the flattened top measures just under 20 metres across, offering commanding views across the surrounding undulating pasture from west through north to southeast, though rising ground blocks the view in other directions.

The mound, constructed from sand, gravel and water rolled stones, is surrounded by the remains of a defensive ditch or fosse that once provided additional protection. This ditch, which survives best on the southeastern to southwestern sides, measures up to 4.5 metres wide and drops 1.8 metres below the current field level. Time and nature have taken their toll; the entire structure is now overgrown with ivy, hawthorn and brambles, whilst treasure hunters or antiquarians have dug into the southeastern face near the summit. The western side of the summit has eroded and now slopes gently from south to north, and much of the protective ditch has been filled in, particularly from the northeast to southeast sections.

An old mill stream adds to the site’s strategic placement, flowing along the northwestern and northern base of the mound before joining the River Nore. This type of fortification, known as a motte, was typically topped with a wooden tower or keep and formed part of the Norman conquest and settlement of Ireland. The site has been recognised for its historical importance and is protected under a preservation order issued in 1983 under the National Monuments Acts.
