This prominent earthwork may have originated as an Anglo-Norman motte, though it’s equally possible that it was a natural hillock that was deliberately scarped and flattened to create a suitable platform for the castle’s construction. The mound, which measures approximately 40 metres from northwest to southeast, is outlined by steep embankments with traces of a defensive fosse (ditch) still visible on the western and northern sides, along with remnants of an outer bank beyond.

Today, no surface remains of the castle itself survive, and the mound may be partly formed from the collapsed debris of the original structure. Historical maps reveal the monument’s gradual deterioration; whilst the 1838 Ordnance Survey depicts it as an intact circular platform with a lime kiln to the northeast, the 1908 revision shows significant damage to both the southern and western sides. Farm buildings had been constructed directly into the base of the mound by this time, with the southern fosse occupied by a farmyard. More recent damage occurred in 1977 when the eastern side was bulldozed to make way for a silage pit.

Archaeological surveys have noted the monument’s changing interpretation over time. A 1942 investigation described the mound as having boulder clay construction with scarped sides reaching 1.5 to 2.1 metres in height, whilst noting signs of modern walls on its oval summit. By 1977, surveyors observed that the earthwork bore a close resemblance to a ringfort, suggesting the site’s complex history may extend beyond its medieval castle phase. Despite the extensive modifications and encroachments by modern farm infrastructure, the monument remains a significant landscape feature that speaks to the area’s layered past.
