Castle – ringwork, Shanbally, Co. Tipperary South

On a gentle southwestern slope near a ridge summit in County Tipperary South, the remains of Shanbally's castle ringwork offer a glimpse into medieval Ireland's defensive architecture.

This raised circular earthwork, measuring approximately 34 metres north to south and 41 metres east to west, is defined by a sloping scarp rising 1.64 metres and surrounded by a wide, U-shaped fosse about 4.4 metres across. Though pasture grass now covers the monument, visitors can still make out the defensive features, including what appears to be the remnants of a causeway entrance on the western side. The southwestern section shows signs of later disturbance from localised quarrying, where the fosse becomes less distinct.

The site’s history reveals layers of use and destruction spanning centuries. Known locally as ‘the rath of the baron’s court’, this monument once stood much higher with a conical shape until a farmer levelled much of it during the first half of the nineteenth century. During this destructive work, a cist containing human remains was discovered, suggesting the site may have had earlier ritual significance or been reused for burial purposes. The Ordnance Survey Letters from the 1930s noted that the land had been under tillage for some time, with cultivation ridges still visible across the surface, and that significant portions of the mound on the southwest, south, southeast and northeast sides had been nearly levelled.

Today, the ringwork sits within sight of other medieval monuments that hint at the area’s former importance; Lisronagh tower house stands visible about 200 metres to the southwest, whilst a medieval church lies roughly 150 metres downslope in the same direction. These clustered fortifications and religious buildings suggest this was once a significant settlement area, where the ringwork may have served as an early Norman fortification or administrative centre before the construction of the nearby stone tower house.
