In the townland of Ballymagauran, County Cavan, the weathered limestone walls of a late medieval tower house stand as a testament to Ireland's turbulent past.

This rectangular structure, measuring 9.5 metres east to west and 5.9 metres north to south, was built from rough, uncoursed limestone masonry typical of defensive architecture from the late 16th or early 17th century. Though now roofless and partially collapsed, the building originally rose two storeys high, serving as both a fortified residence and a symbol of local authority during a period when such strongholds dotted the Irish landscape.

The remaining walls reveal intriguing architectural details that help piece together the building’s original appearance. A plain splayed window pierces the western end of the south wall, whilst a fireplace and chimney occupy the eastern end of the same wall, indicating the location of the main living quarters. Half of the original doorway arch lies amongst the rubble at ground level, its dressed stonework confirming the structure’s late Tudor or early Stuart date. These features suggest this was once a comfortable, if modest, dwelling despite its defensive purpose.

Perhaps the most curious surviving element is a badly damaged stone head at the northwest corner of the building. When examined by Davies in 1947, this carved grotesque still showed grooves beneath its chin, suggesting it was crafted in a style typical of pre-1600 architectural decoration. Unfortunately, vandalism in the mid-20th century has left this sculptural detail “barbarously mutilated”, though it remains an evocative reminder of the tower house’s original character. Such decorative elements were common on Irish tower houses, where they served both as status symbols and, according to folk belief, as protection against evil spirits.
