Children’s burial ground, Ballyline, Co. Clare

At the edge of Templeline graveyard in County Clare, a roughly semicircular patch of ground holds a quiet and particular kind of history.

The unmarked stones here belong to a burial practice that was, for centuries, common across Ireland but rarely spoken of openly: the interment of unbaptised children in unconsecrated or liminal ground, set apart from the main burial area used by the wider community. These spaces, known in Irish as cillíní, were used for infants who died before baptism, and occasionally for others considered, for various reasons, outside the ordinary rites of Catholic burial. The stones at this site carry no inscriptions, no names, no dates.

Writing in 1992, Averil Swinfen noted that local tradition held children to have been buried at this spot up to forty or fifty years before her time of writing, placing active use of the site somewhere around the mid-twentieth century. That is a striking detail. The cillín tradition is often discussed as something remote and medieval, but at Templeline it persisted well within living memory, a reminder that the social and religious pressures that produced these separate burial grounds did not dissolve quickly. The roughly semicircular shape of the ground is itself worth noting; cillíní frequently occupy unusual or marginal landforms, and the distinctive outline here may reflect both the topography of the site and a deliberate demarcation from the surrounding area.
