Children’s burial ground, Lenamore, Co. Galway

Tucked inside the earthen bank of an ancient ringfort at Lenamore in County Galway, there is a small burial ground where children were laid to rest, quietly and without church sanction, until living memory.

The site is one of many such places across Ireland known as cillíní, or cilleens, informal burial grounds used for unbaptised infants, who were barred by Catholic doctrine from consecrated ground. The choice of a ringfort, a type of circular enclosure built in early medieval Ireland typically as a farmstead and defined by a raised earthen bank, was no accident. These pre-Christian monuments sat outside the landscape of the parish church, and that ambiguity made them useful for burials that did not fit within official religion.

The ground here occupies an irregularly shaped area roughly 28.8 metres east to west and 14 metres north to south, enclosed on its western and northern sides by a low, grassed-over earthen bank, with the ringfort's own bank forming the boundary elsewhere. Within that space, the main concentration of graves is gathered into a smaller subrectangular section, approximately 14.2 metres by 11 metres, left unenclosed. Small set stones mark the individual graves, each oriented east to west in the manner of Christian burial, a quiet insistence on sacred form even in a place that official faith refused to recognise. The site was recorded by O'Flanagan in 1927, and according to the evidence available, it remained in use until approximately the mid-twentieth century, perhaps as recently as the 1940s or 1950s.

The stones are modest, uncarved, and easy to miss without knowing what they signify. What makes the place quietly unusual is how it holds two things at once: the deep pre-Christian age of the ringfort beneath it, and the very recent grief of families who had nowhere else to go.
