Marked simply as a burial ground on Ordnance Survey maps, old and new, it was also recorded as a fort in the original name books compiled by OS surveyors in the nineteenth century. That dual character, a defensive enclosure repurposed, or perhaps always shared, as a place of burial, is common enough in the Irish countryside, but the local name attached to this one adds another layer: the White Fort, a name drawn from the townland of Killinane.

Children's burial grounds, known in Irish tradition as cillíní, were used for the interment of unbaptised infants and others who, under Catholic ecclesiastical rules, could not be buried in consecrated ground. These sites were frequently located within or near ancient enclosures, raths, or other pre-existing earthworks, places already set apart from the everyday landscape and freighted with a sense of the liminal. At Teeromoyle, a few upright stone slabs survive within the enclosure's stony interior. Their precise age and purpose are not recorded in detail, but their presence is consistent with informal burial practice, modest markers placed without the ceremony that accompanied churchyard burial.
