Church, An Tsráid, Co. Donegal
The graveyard at Glencolumbkille Church of Ireland sits on what's believed to be an ancient ecclesiastical site founded by St. Colmcille himself.
Church, An Tsráid, Co. Donegal
Located on a small rise that commands the best views across the Glencolumbkille valley floor, the site is surrounded by good pastureland and holds National Monument status (number 139). Whilst some scholars have suggested traces of a circular enclosure once existed here, recent surveys haven’t found any visible evidence of these features.
The current church, which stands within the graveyard, was built just north of where an older church once stood until its demolition in 1828. Historical records paint a picture of that earlier building; it measured 52 feet by 21 feet, with substantial walls three feet thick and rising between 12 and 14 feet high. Most intriguingly, it featured a vaulted, arched tower at its western end, suggesting this was once quite an impressive structure for its time.
Just south of today’s church, visitors can find the modern entrance to a souterrain, one of those fascinating underground passages that dot the Irish landscape. These subterranean chambers, typically dating from the early medieval period, were used for storage, refuge, or both. The presence of this souterrain, combined with the site’s prominent position and long ecclesiastical history, marks this location as one of significant archaeological and historical importance in County Donegal.
