Church, Baunmore, Co. Galway

Between a garden feature and a genuine medieval ruin, the remains of a small church at Baunmore occupy an oddly domestic setting: the front garden of a private house, just off a byroad roughly 350 metres south-southeast of Athenry in County Galway.

What survives is largely a single heavily ivy-clad west gable, standing to around 4.5 metres in height and spanning just under 6 metres internally, along with short stubs of the north and south side-walls. There are no surviving doorways, windows, or decorative stonework of any kind. The east end, which in a typical medieval church would have contained the altar and chancel, has entirely vanished.

The church is thought to be medieval in origin, though the absence of datable architectural features makes any closer estimate impossible. Its east-west alignment is conventional for Christian worship of that period, orientating the congregation towards Jerusalem. What gives the site an additional, slightly unexpected layer of interest is a wall monument of 18th-century date set into the outer, roadside face of the surviving gable wall, to the left of the gate that leads into the enclosure. This suggests the ruin remained a place of some commemorative significance long after the building itself had fallen out of use, with families still choosing it as a location for formal memorial inscription even as the walls crumbled around it.

The monument is visible from the road without entering the private garden, fixed into the exterior face of the wall rather than the interior. Athenry itself, a short distance to the north-northwest, retains some of the finest medieval town walls in Ireland, and the Baunmore church, modest and fragmentary as it is, sits within the same broad landscape of medieval settlement that once made this part of east Galway unusually dense with ecclesiastical and civic activity.
