Churches & Chapels
Off the coast of County Clare, there is an island small enough to overlook on most maps, and on that island there are the remains of a church.
Coney Island sits in the Shannon Estuary, and like several places sharing that name around Ireland, it likely takes it from the Irish coinín, meaning rabbit. The presence of a church on such a modest scrap of land points to the early medieval habit of seeking out marginal, isolated places for religious settlement, a pattern familiar from island monasteries elsewhere along the Irish Atlantic fringe. What exactly survives here, and how old it is, remains difficult to say with any precision.
