Near the western shore of Kiltooris Lough in County Donegal stand the weathered ruins of a medieval church, its stone walls rising from rough pasture that has reclaimed the surrounding landscape.

This modest structure, measuring roughly 8.1 metres by 4 metres internally, once served as a chapel of ease to the parish church on nearby Inishkeel island. By 1622, the island church had become so difficult to reach that local authorities decided to hold parish services here instead, a practical solution that lasted until 1724 when worship moved to the newly built St James’s Church at Narin.

The ruins tell their own architectural story through surviving features that hint at medieval craftsmanship. The north and south walls still stand about 2.5 metres high, whilst the western gable remains intact with its original lintelled doorway at the centre. Though the eastern gable has completely collapsed, leaving only foundation stones, enough remains to understand how the building functioned. The doorway’s wooden door once swung on a post that moved in a perforated stone projecting from the wall; a clever engineering solution typical of the period. A single window pierces the southern wall, its simple rectangular opening formed from four roughly dressed stone blocks. The splayed interior reveals pivot holes where wooden shutters once hung, and a small groove in the western jamb shows where a sliding bolt secured them against Atlantic storms.

Today, the church ruins sit within a graveyard dotted with modern grave markers, a reminder that whilst the building fell silent centuries ago, the site retained its sacred character. Despite historical records mentioning various uses and alterations over time, the physical structure shows no evidence of major rebuilding or modification; what survives appears to be original medieval work, weathered but largely unchanged since the congregation departed for Narin nearly three hundred years ago.
