At Garrane in County Kerry, the Ordnance Survey maps, both the first and second editions, mark a structure labelled 'Cloghaun' or Clochán at a specific location, yet nothing remains there today. The site has not been buried, overgrown, or simply overlooked; local information confirms it was recently removed. What once stood here is now entirely gone, leaving the cartographic record as the only evidence that it ever existed.

A clochán is a dry-stone corbelled hut, typically beehive-shaped, built without mortar by carefully layering and angling flat stones so that each course projects slightly inward until the structure closes at the top. They are associated with early medieval monastic and agricultural life in Ireland, and the Iveragh Peninsula in Kerry has a notable concentration of them, many still intact. The Iveragh peninsula archaeological survey, compiled by A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan and published by Cork University Press in 1996, recorded this particular example at Garrane, cataloguing it alongside hundreds of other sites across one of the most archaeologically dense landscapes in the country. That it was still present, or at least still noted, at the time of that survey makes its subsequent removal all the more striking.

There is nothing to see at this location now, which is in some respects the whole point. The gap between what the maps show and what the ground holds is itself a kind of record, a reminder that the survival of early structures depends not just on the passage of centuries but on the decisions made in much more recent times.
