The original design featured a square courtyard enclosed by curtain walls, though time has taken its toll; the south wall and gatehouse have vanished entirely, leaving only archaeological hints of their former presence. What remains tells a compelling story of medieval defensive architecture, with rectangular towers still visible at three corners (southeast, southwest, and northwest), whilst foundations at the northeast corner suggest a fourth tower once completed the defensive scheme.
The castle’s eastern side developed into a complex range of buildings over time, incorporating the modified southeast tower into an impressive sequence of halls. Each surviving tower reveals fascinating structural details: the southeast tower retains its barrel-vaulted ground floor topped by two additional storeys, complete with a large garderobe projecting from its northeast angle, whilst defensive features like cross loops and gargoyles remain visible at wall walk level. The southwest tower mirrors this vaulted ground floor design, though the exact number of upper floors has been lost to history, and the northwest tower, despite significant damage, still preserves its spiral staircase that once provided access to the upper floors and defensive wall walks.
The fortress’s defensive capabilities extended beyond its walls and towers. A fosse, or defensive ditch, once encircled the base of the walls, though it’s now only visible along the northern and western sides. An additional outer fosse, positioned roughly 40 metres north of the main fortification, provided an extra layer of defence against potential attackers. These earthworks, combined with the stone fortifications, created a formidable defensive complex that would have dominated the local landscape and served as both military stronghold and administrative centre for the surrounding region.
