The ringed cross, designated as National Monument No. 23, was recently re-erected after spending considerable time lying broken in the graveyard outside. Local tradition claims it was brought from Tory Island, though this romantic notion lacks substantial evidence; John O’Donovan, visiting in 1835, was told the cross had been toppled by a storm about a century earlier, and the outline where it once lay can still be traced in the graveyard.

The cross itself is a study in medieval craftsmanship, with a shaft that tapers from 66 centimetres at its base to 55 centimetres at the top, whilst the arms span 2.3 metres across. The ring band connecting the shaft and arms varies between 8 and 11 centimetres in width, forming an imperfect circle that encloses a space of roughly one metre across. Modern interventions are visible; metal strips secure the cross where it was once broken, and portions of the ring on the left side have been repaired. Despite its impressive size, the cross bears minimal decoration, featuring only raised flat panels on the head and arms, a simplicity that speaks to its early origins.

The site at Ray, known locally as Ráith Finan, sits in low-lying wetland close to the sea and includes several intriguing features beyond the cross itself. At the base of the monument rest two millstones, one cut to form a cross base, alongside a peculiar stone with a corkscrew perforation. The graveyard contains a substantial basin stone measuring 80 by 85 centimetres with a carved depression, possibly used for baptisms or other rituals, whilst a standing stone over two metres tall guards the northeast corner of the cemetery. These elements combine to suggest Ray was once a significant early ecclesiastical settlement, its importance now quietly preserved in these enduring stone monuments.
