The most striking feature is a substantial cairn measuring 7.1 metres by 6.2 metres, with a built altar at its centre. Visitors approach this sacred space through a passage that enters from the south, whilst a primitive stone cross crowns the top of the cairn, marking this as a place of religious significance that has endured for centuries.

Just to the north-northwest of the cairn stands a drystone-walled structure, its walls rising to about 65 centimetres in height and spanning 3.4 by 2.5 metres. This smaller building, constructed without mortar in the traditional Irish style, likely served as a shelter or prayer house for pilgrims visiting the holy well. The careful positioning of these structures; the well, the cairn with its altar and cross, and the stone building; creates a coherent religious complex that speaks to the organised nature of early Christian worship in this part of Donegal.

The site represents a fascinating example of how Ireland’s early Christian communities adapted and incorporated older traditions into their religious practices. Holy wells were often pre-Christian sacred sites that became Christianised over time, with the addition of crosses, cairns, and other religious structures transforming them into pilgrimage destinations. Today, these monuments stand as testament to centuries of devotion, their weathered stones continuing to draw those interested in Ireland’s rich spiritual heritage.
