Within the Conwal graveyard in County Donegal lies a fascinating collection of early Christian monuments, including a holy well, the ruins of a church, and numerous carved stone slabs.

The site underwent significant tidying around 1968, when a grassy rectangular mound extending from the church’s south wall was transformed into a stone cairn. This rectangular structure, with its flat top paved with grave slabs, now serves as a repository for the graveyard’s remarkable collection of carved stones. Among these are six upright slabs bearing cruciform designs, one depicting a human figure, and three that remain uninscribed, alongside three recumbent cross slabs built into the cairn itself and five others resting on top.

The graveyard’s most intriguing mystery centres on Cross-slab no. 18, a carved stone that has since vanished without trace. Originally standing 0.7 metres high and 0.35 metres wide, this slab featured an elaborate swastika design formed from two bands of interlacing, with small crosses adorning each corner square. Below this central motif were three square spirals, followed by a spiral that opened into two trumpet forms; a design typical of early medieval Irish stone carving. When archaeologists surveyed County Donegal between 1980 and 1981, the slab had already disappeared, its current whereabouts remaining unknown.

The cairn itself hosts twelve additional grave slabs, including one from the late 19th century, whilst the others remain plain and uninscribed, some displaying the distinctive trapezoidal shape common to early Irish grave markers. A photograph taken by Professor Etienne Rynne in the 1960s captures the site before the disappearance of Cross-slab no. 18, providing valuable documentation of this lost piece of Ireland’s carved stone heritage. Though the original transparency has faded over time, it offers a rare glimpse into the graveyard’s appearance before modern alterations and the mysterious vanishing of one of its most distinctive monuments.
