On the southeastern slopes of Glendoon Hill, overlooking the River Swilly, lies Conwal Graveyard, a site that whispers stories from as early as the 7th century.

This ancient ecclesiastical settlement continues to serve its community today, having been recently extended whilst preserving its remarkable collection of early Christian monuments. The graveyard underwent a thoughtful restoration around 1968, when a grassy mound near the church ruins was transformed into a distinctive rectangular stone cairn, its flat top now paved with an impressive array of historic grave slabs.

The site reveals layers of religious significance through its various features: the ruins of an old church stand alongside a holy well, both testament to centuries of worship and pilgrimage. The cairn itself has become a repository for the graveyard’s most intriguing artefacts, displaying twelve grave slabs ranging from plain, uninscribed stones to a late 19th century example. Amongst these, several trapezoidal slabs hint at ancient burial traditions. Six upright stones bear cruciform designs, whilst another depicts a human figure; three stand uninscribed, their purpose lost to time. Five additional cross slabs rest unfixed upon the cairn, with three more recumbent cross slabs set firmly into its structure.

One particularly notable piece sits embedded in the cairn’s southwest corner: a modest slab measuring 74cm by 29cm, bearing an incised wheeled cross on its eastern face. A small circular depression marks its centre, possibly once holding a precious stone or serving some ritual purpose. This cross slab, catalogued as DG053-029004, represents the skilled craftsmanship of early medieval stone carvers who left their mark on this sacred landscape. The entire complex stands as a remarkable continuity of faith and community, where modern burials share space with monuments that have watched over the Donegal countryside for over a millennium.
