Danganbrack Castle, Danganbrack, Co. Clare

Danganbrack Castle rises from a natural rocky outcrop on the south bank of the River Rine in County Clare, its ivy-covered walls telling the story of medieval defensive architecture in rural Ireland.

This rectangular tower house, measuring approximately 14 by 9 metres externally, stands four storeys tall with an attic level, each corner reinforced by gables topped with chimney stacks, save for the northeastern wall. Built on a sheltered hollow in the rock face, the castle takes advantage of its natural defensive position, with the crag itself adding an extra metre or so of height to its imposing structure.

The castle’s ground floor reveals the paranoia of its medieval builders through its carefully designed defensive features. Visitors entering through the pointed doorway in the southeastern wall would find themselves in a small lobby, vulnerable to attack from a murder hole above; a grim reminder of the violent times in which the castle was built. From here, passages lead to a guard room on one side and a spiral staircase on the other, whilst straight ahead lies the main ground floor chamber. This vaulted room, with its wicker-centred ceiling still visible, contains two window lights on the southwestern wall and a later fireplace insertion on the northwestern side. More intriguingly, the northeastern wall features both a slop-stone chute and the outlet of a garderobe chute; practical medieval solutions to waste disposal that would have emptied down the rocky crag below.

Above the entrance lobby sits a barrel-vaulted room accessible via the spiral stairs, lit by windows in multiple walls including one at the eastern corner. Though the upper floors remain inaccessible today, the exterior reveals rectangular windows, with the largest positioned on the southwestern wall to maximise light into the living quarters. Machicolations at each corner allowed defenders to drop projectiles on attackers below, though unlike many Irish tower houses, Danganbrack lacks a wall walk or parapet, suggesting either an incomplete construction or a different defensive strategy altogether. This fascinating structure stands as a testament to the ingenuity of medieval Irish castle builders, who managed to create a formidable stronghold that balanced defensive necessity with domestic practicality.
