A steep hill in the townland of Ballydonagh, County Galway, planted with mature beech and sycamore trees might seem unremarkable at first glance, but its classification as a designed landscape feature marks it out as something deliberate rather than accidental.
In the Irish countryside, such planted hills were a common device of estate design, used to create a sense of drama or visual enclosure in what would otherwise be flat or open ground. The trees themselves, beech and sycamore in particular, were favoured by landscape designers for their canopy spread and their ability to signal, even at a distance, that a hand had been at work on the land.
