At Sandyhill in County Cork, a tree-ring survives in the landscape, one of those quietly deliberate features that tends to escape notice precisely because it looks, at a glance, like a natural arrangement of growth.
Tree-rings, sometimes called ring plantations, were a common element of designed estate landscapes in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland, circular or near-circular plantings of trees laid out for visual effect, to punctuate a view, anchor a rise in the ground, or simply signal that a landowner had the means and inclination to shape the land around them. What sets them apart from ordinary woodland is intention: the geometry is the point.
