Druids Circle, Talach, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Talach in County Mayo, a stone circle sits in the landscape carrying the name most Irish antiquarians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries reached for whenever they encountered a prehistoric monument they could not quite explain: the Druids Circle.

The label was applied freely and often inaccurately across Ireland, attached to megalithic tombs, standing stones, and stone circles alike, long before archaeology had the tools or the inclination to distinguish between them. Whatever the circle at Talach actually is, and however many stones remain in place, that inherited name alone tells a story about how earlier generations tried to make sense of structures they knew to be ancient but could not date or attribute with any confidence.

Stone circles in the west of Ireland generally belong to the prehistoric period, most commonly the Bronze Age, roughly 2500 to 500 BC, though the range is wide and the purposes assigned to them have shifted considerably over time, from ceremonial and astronomical functions to territorial markers or sites of communal gathering. Mayo has a notable concentration of prehistoric monuments, partly a consequence of the blanket bog that has preserved features which would have been ploughed or quarried away elsewhere. The name Talach itself is likely derived from the Irish tulach, meaning a small hill or mound, a common element in townland names across Connacht and one that sometimes, though not always, signals the presence of an ancient earthwork or elevated feature nearby.
