Earthwork, Grenan, Co. Kilkenny
Co. Kilkenny |
Ritual/Ceremonial
In the townland of Grenan in County Kilkenny, an earthwork sits in the landscape, categorised, recorded, and largely unexamined in the public domain.
Earthworks of this kind, a broad term covering everything from ancient ringforts and burial mounds to later field boundaries and enclosures, are scattered across the Irish countryside in their thousands, and yet each one carries its own particular story about who shaped the ground, when, and why. The Grenan example is one of those sites that has been formally recognised as a monument but whose details remain, for the moment, out of public reach.
