In the village of Glencolumbkille in County Donegal, the Church of Ireland graveyard sits on what's believed to be far more ancient sacred ground.

Local tradition holds that St. Colmcille, one of Ireland’s most revered saints, founded an ecclesiastical settlement on this very spot centuries ago. The site, now designated as National Monument no. 139, continues to serve as the village’s burial ground, its weathered headstones standing amongst the grass where monks once walked.

The original religious enclosure that would have defined the monastery’s boundaries has long since vanished, though some scholars have attempted to trace its outline. In 1971, archaeologist Michael Herity suggested that remnants of a circular enclosure could still be detected in the landscape, typical of early Irish monastic sites which were often ringed by earthen banks or stone walls. However, when archaeologist Brian Lacy conducted a more thorough survey in 1983, he found no visible traces of these ancient boundaries; time and farming have likely erased what the dissolution of the monasteries didn’t destroy.

Today’s visitors to the graveyard might not immediately recognise they’re standing within what was once a bustling religious community. Yet this layering of history is characteristic of Ireland’s sacred sites, where medieval churches were built atop early Christian foundations, and modern graveyards continue to occupy the same consecrated ground that has served communities for over a millennium. The absence of visible remains doesn’t diminish the site’s significance; rather, it speaks to the continuity of spiritual tradition in this corner of Donegal, where St. Colmcille’s legacy persists in local memory if not in stone.
