Ecclesiastical enclosure, Kilbraghan, Co. Kilkenny

At a crossroads in Kilbraghan, Co. Kilkenny, a road curves in a way that may be the only surviving trace of an early Irish ecclesiastical enclosure.

Such enclosures, roughly circular boundaries that once defined the sacred and domestic space of an early Christian community, were common features of the Irish landscape. Here, the gentle arc of the road leading towards Graigue may preserve the northern edge of one such enclosure, estimated at around 90 to 100 metres in diameter. Nothing marks the site today, and on the eastern and southern sides, even that subtle curve in the road disappears.

The church that once stood here was dedicated to St. Braghan, the saint who gives the townland its name. His feast day appears in the Martyrology of Donegal on the 17th of September, which places him within the early Irish ecclesiastical tradition, though little else is recorded about him. Writing in 1883, the local historian Holahan noted that the site of the former graveyard was still pointed out at the crossroads, in a field to the left as one approaches from Graigue, and that when the field was ploughed early in the nineteenth century, portions of coffins and human bones came to the surface. By the time Carrigan wrote in 1905, the fuller story had come into focus: the church had been thrown down and the graveyard destroyed during road construction, at what Carrigan described as the exact point where the public road branches off to Graigue. He also recorded a local tradition that a monastery had once occupied the site. The road that obliterated the churchyard may, with some irony, have preserved in its own curve the faint outline of what it destroyed.
