Enclosures
In the townland of Aghaward in County Mayo, an enclosure sits quietly in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully described to the public.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet most varied monuments in the Irish countryside: the term covers everything from the circular earthen banks of a ringfort, which would have enclosed a family farmstead in the early medieval period, to earlier prehistoric boundaries whose original purpose remains a matter of interpretation. Without knowing which type this one represents, its age and function remain open questions.
