The structure, measuring roughly 12.5 metres from north to south and 8 metres from east to west, appears to have been created by excavating a hollow about 60 centimetres deep into the hillside. The eastern half of this depression was then carefully lined with boulders, each averaging about 67 centimetres in height and up to 46 centimetres wide, creating a distinctive curved boundary.

The western edge tells a different story; here, a straight drystone field wall completes the enclosure, suggesting either a practical adaptation of existing features or perhaps different phases of construction. Inside, the ground is notably uneven, sloping downward from east to west, with a natural rock step running north to south through the centre, dividing the interior space. This internal topography might offer clues to the enclosure’s original purpose, though its exact function remains elusive.

Dating this structure has proved challenging for archaeologists. Whilst the Archaeological Survey of Donegal first documented it in 1981, they chose not to include it in their published survey, perhaps reflecting uncertainty about its age and significance. One intriguing possibility is that the enclosure might be connected to the ruins of a vernacular settlement located to the northeast, suggesting it could have served as an outbuilding, animal pen, or storage area for a once-thriving farmstead. Without further archaeological investigation, however, this highland hollow keeps its secrets, standing as a subtle reminder of the many unnamed and undated features that dot Ireland’s rural landscape.
