An oval feature roughly 88 metres by 61 metres appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839, marked as a tree plantation. By the 1900 revision it had become an oval field. At some point after that, it disappeared from the landscape altogether. What was actually there, beneath any of those later overlays, may have been nothing more than a natural hummock, a low rounded rise in the ground that successive observers dressed up with meaning.

The site sits on sloping pasture with broad views along and across the valley to the north-west, south-east, and south-west, the kind of position that tends to attract archaeologists' attention because it resembles the commanding placement of an earthen enclosure or ringfort. A local account from 1985, in which O'Kelly noted that Boggan townland contains a fort or moat overlooking the Munster River, appears to have drawn on the same oval outline visible on the OS map rather than on any physical remains. In other words, a cartographic feature, possibly representing a planted copse on a natural rise, may have quietly accumulated the identity of a defended site through repeated reference. The enclosure itself has since been removed, and whatever boundaries once defined it are gone.
