The main feature is an irregularly shaped stone enclosure measuring 25 by 16 metres internally, marked on old Ordnance Survey maps simply as ‘the ring’. The enclosure walls are formed from set stones, and within this boundary sits a low mound that appears to be a natural formation, alongside what’s likely a modern trench. The interior remains persistently waterlogged, making detailed investigation challenging.

The site reveals several curious features that hint at its ceremonial or social significance. Along the northern section of the wall sits a peculiar arrangement of stones forming what locals call ‘the Chair’, a seat-like structure that seems deliberately constructed. About 19 metres northwest of the main ring, another circular stone arrangement spans roughly 21 metres in diameter, with a smaller 4-metre circle of stones at its centre; though both formations are now heavily overgrown with vegetation. A triangular standing stone, just over a metre tall, marks the west-northwest boundary of the complex.

This entire archaeological landscape, which includes old field boundaries and various stone scatters, reflects centuries of human activity in this remote corner of Donegal. The site was comprehensively documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal in 1983, though its original purpose remains open to interpretation. Whether it served as a ceremonial gathering place, a territorial marker, or held some other significance to the people who built it, the ring at Clogher continues to stand as a testament to Ireland’s layered prehistoric past.
