Enclosure, Cloghran, Co. Dublin

Somewhere beneath the tarmac and warehouse units of the North Western Business Park at Cloghran, on the northern fringes of County Dublin, lies the ghost of an ancient enclosure that no one can see standing at ground level.

It survives only as a cropmark, a faint signature left in the earth that becomes legible only from the air, when differences in soil moisture and crop growth betray the outline of something buried and long since levelled.

The enclosure was one of three such features identified from a single aerial photograph held in the CUCAP collection, reference BDR 29. It measured roughly 40 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south, taking an irregular oval shape. Compiled by archaeologist Geraldine Stout and later updated by Christine Baker, the record notes that it was probably a levelled ringfort. Ringforts, which are the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, were typically circular or oval enclosures defined by an earthen bank and ditch, used as enclosed farmsteads during the early medieval period, broadly from around 500 to 1000 AD. This one has been entirely built over, leaving no surface trace whatsoever.

There is, practically speaking, nothing to see here, and that is precisely what makes the record worth pausing over. The site sits within an industrial and business development zone north of Dublin Airport, and access is not a matter of walking a field path or reading a landscape. What a visitor can do, if curious, is look up the CUCAP aerial photograph archive, through which the cropmark evidence was originally identified, and see for themselves how archaeology survives in forms invisible to anyone on the ground. The Cloghran enclosure is a useful reminder that the absence of a visible monument does not mean the absence of history, only that development has, in this case, won out entirely over preservation.
