The structure is visible not as a mound or a wall but as a cropmark, one of those ghostly outlines that only reveal themselves from the air, when variations in soil depth and moisture cause crops above buried features to grow at slightly different rates, producing faint rings or lines readable from altitude but invisible at ground level. What the aerial camera captured in July 1989 was the outline of a fosse, a defensive ditch, tracing most of a circle before being clipped slightly on its western side by a modern field boundary.

The photograph shows more than just the enclosure itself. To its east, the cropmarks of a rectangular field and a less regular one beyond it suggest the enclosure once sat within a small worked landscape, its entrance facing eastward towards those fields. Roughly ninety metres to the northwest lies a ringfort, a separate site but close enough to suggest that this corner of north Cork was once meaningfully occupied. Ringforts, typically the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, are among the most common archaeological monuments in the country, and the proximity of this enclosure to one raises questions about whether the two sites were contemporary, functionally linked, or simply neighbours across the centuries.

Because the enclosure survives only as a buried feature with no surface expression, there is little for a visitor to observe directly on the ground. Its interest lies almost entirely in what aerial photography can reveal about how invisible the past can be, pressed flat beneath ordinary farmland in north Cork.
