Enclosure, Dromore, Co. Donegal

In the quiet valley north of Glasbolie hillfort in County Donegal, an unusual earthen mound sits at the bottom of a stream valley, presenting something of an archaeological puzzle.

Enclosure, Dromore, Co. Donegal

The mound features a shallow, fosse-like depression along its western side; a characteristic that might suggest human construction. However, this ditch-like feature mysteriously vanishes on the eastern side, where the mound itself appears less pronounced and somewhat deteriorated. Whether this asymmetry is the result of natural erosion, deliberate design, or simply the way the landscape formed over millennia remains unclear.

The site’s proximity to Glasbolie hillfort, which occupies a commanding position on a nearby hilltop, raises intriguing questions about its purpose and origin. Could this mound have served some ancillary function to the hillfort above, perhaps as an outpost, boundary marker, or ritual site? Or is it simply a natural geological formation that coincidentally resembles human-made earthworks? The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, which documented this feature in 1983, notably hedged its bets, suggesting the site “may be totally natural” whilst still considering it worthy of archaeological record.

Located in Dromore, Ballintra Ed, this enigmatic feature represents the type of ambiguous site that makes Irish archaeology both fascinating and frustrating. Without excavation, it’s impossible to determine whether ancient hands shaped this mound or if it’s merely a quirk of geology. Its inclusion in the county’s archaeological survey speaks to the thoroughness of Irish heritage documentation, where even uncertain features are carefully catalogued for future investigation. For now, it remains one of many mysterious earthworks dotting the Donegal landscape, silently keeping its secrets whilst archaeologists and historians debate its true nature.
