Enclosure, Garraun, Co. Clare

In the townland of Garraun in County Clare, an archaeological enclosure sits on the landscape, recorded but largely undescribed.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood monument types in Ireland, ranging from prehistoric ritual sites to early medieval farmsteads enclosed by an earthen bank or stone wall, and the term itself covers an enormous span of human activity across thousands of years. That Garraun has one is certain; what it looked like, who built it, and when, remains officially unspecified in any publicly available form.
