Enclosure, Gortdromakiery, Co. Kerry

There is almost nothing left to see at Gortdromakiery, and that is precisely what makes it interesting.

Somewhere in a level pasture at the foot of a steep north-west-facing slope in County Kerry, a prehistoric enclosure has more or less returned to the earth. What survives is a shallow semicircular depression, roughly nine and a half metres across and only a quarter of a metre deep, its straight edge formed by an existing field boundary. Scattered stones and large rocks run along that boundary. A steep-sided hollow in the ground, noted as resembling a pond, adds a further irregularity to the field. To an untrained eye, none of this would register as archaeology.

In the 1930s, a Captain D.B. O'Connell visited the site and recorded something considerably more legible. He described a slight central mound that did not appear to be a natural formation, sitting in a large field that sloped down from a farmhouse. Around it, he observed what he called an eccentric circle of about a dozen large flagstones, most of them presenting as low surface mounds, with one entirely exposed and several others partially so. The word "eccentric" here carries its older geometric sense, meaning the circle was irregular or off-centre rather than perfectly round. O'Connell's account suggests a defined enclosure of some kind, possibly associated with a souterrain, which is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber typically built during the early medieval period for storage or refuge. The souterrain at this site remains only a possibility, recorded but unconfirmed. Since O'Connell's visit, the visible features he described have disappeared entirely, leaving the shallow depression and scattered stones as the only indicators that anything lies beneath.
