Enclosure, Kildaree, Co. Galway

On a gentle rise above the bogland of north Galway, the remains of an ancient enclosure sit in open grassland, easy to miss and easier still to misread as a natural feature of the landscape.

What survives is a subrectangular outline, roughly 35 metres on its northeast to southwest axis and 25 metres across, defined not by a standing wall or earthen bank but by a scarp, a slight but deliberate drop in the ground surface that once marked a boundary of some kind.

Enclosures of this type are a recurring feature of the Irish countryside, and they served a variety of purposes across different periods. Some were the boundaries of early settlement sites or farmsteads, others had ceremonial or agricultural functions, and without excavation it is rarely possible to say with certainty what any individual example was for. At Kildaree, the monument is described as poorly preserved, and the reasons are not hard to see. A field wall, probably built in the post-medieval period when land was being reorganised for agricultural use, cuts across the monument at its northwest corner. A large quarry presses in against it from the northeast, suggesting that at some point stone was being extracted from ground immediately adjacent to, and perhaps partly from within, the original enclosure. Between these two intrusions, the scarp that remains is the principal evidence that anything was once deliberately shaped here.
