Enclosure, Kyleadohir, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Kyleadohir in County Kilkenny, there is nothing left to see, and that absence is itself the point.

A circular earthwork roughly 40 metres across once occupied this ground, the kind of enclosure that typically dates to the early medieval period in Ireland, when ringforts served as enclosed farmsteads, defined by a raised bank and internal ditch. By the time the first Ordnance Survey mapped the area in 1839, it was already old enough to be treated as a feature of the landscape rather than a structure with a living purpose. By 1948, when surveyors returned, the shape had changed: the 1st edition map showed something roughly circular, while the revision recorded a five-sided form, most likely because field boundaries had been laid across the bank in the intervening century, straightening what had once curved. Then, in 1955, the enclosure was levelled entirely.

The date 1955 is unusually precise for an act of agricultural clearance, and it comes from a personal communication made to researchers in 1986 by a J. Maher, presumably someone with local knowledge of the land and its recent history. That chain of transmission, an event remembered by a person, passed on decades later, and recorded in a survey, is often how the disappearance of minor earthworks gets documented at all. The enclosure sat in a quietly layered landscape: the Kings River runs roughly north to south about 570 metres to the west, and a townland boundary curves along the northern edge of the site, apparently following the line of a stream. Enclosures of this kind were frequently positioned with water nearby, both for practical reasons and, perhaps, because boundaries of all kinds tended to accumulate in the same parts of a landscape.
