Enclosure, Lackagh, Co. Donegal

On a rough, rocky terrace in the upland pastures of Lackagh, County Donegal, a modest circular enclosure sits quietly amongst the grass and stone.

Enclosure, Lackagh, Co. Donegal

This ancient structure, measuring roughly 13 metres from northwest to southeast and 12 metres from northeast to southwest, occupies a dramatic landscape where the ground falls away in a series of rocky terraces to the north and northwest. The site is naturally sheltered by a steep, rock-studded slope that rises behind it to the south, whilst a narrow ravine about 100 metres to the northwest leads down through the cliffs to the shoreline. Lough Free lies approximately 500 metres to the west, and Dunmore Hill forms a high ridge to the north, with a convenient spring bubbling up just 10 metres northwest of the enclosure.

The enclosure itself is defined by a low platform, its boundaries marked by a scarp that varies in height from 30 centimetres on the northeastern and eastern sides to 60 centimetres on the southwestern and western edges. The western half of the platform has been deliberately built up to compensate for the natural slope, creating a level interior space for whatever activities once took place here. What remains of the enclosing wall, approximately 1.2 to 1.4 metres wide, now appears as little more than scattered stones poking through the sod; these represent the inner and outer kerbing that would have once supported a more substantial structure.

The surrounding terrace bears the faint traces of cultivation ridges, suggesting that this wasn’t simply a defensive or ceremonial site but part of a working landscape where people lived and farmed. These relict ridges, combined with the enclosure’s practical positioning near water and on relatively level ground, paint a picture of rural life in ancient Ireland, where communities made ingenious use of challenging terrain to create sustainable settlements in even the most exposed Atlantic locations.
