Enclosure, Lackeen, Co. Cork

There is nothing to see at Lackeen in north County Cork, and that is precisely what makes it interesting.

No standing stones, no ruined walls, no earthwork rising from a field. The enclosure here exists only as a cropmark, a ghostly outline that becomes legible solely from the air, when differences in soil moisture cause growing crops to reveal the buried ditches beneath them in subtly different shades of green or gold.

The site was identified in July 1989 during an aerial survey, when photographs captured the cropmark of a circular outer fosse, a fosse being a ditch dug as part of a defensive or boundary feature. A fainter, narrower concentric fosse was also detectable inside it, giving the inner enclosure a diameter of roughly 30 metres. Two possible entrances were noted, orientated to the south-southwest and west-northwest. What this double-ditched arrangement once enclosed is unknown, though circular enclosures of this kind in Ireland are frequently associated with early medieval ringforts, farmsteads surrounded by one or more earthen banks and ditches that functioned as much as status markers as defensive structures. Elsewhere in the same field, linear cropmarks suggest the ghosts of old field boundaries, long since levelled by centuries of ploughing.

Because the site survives only as a subsurface trace, there is nothing a visitor could readily identify on the ground. Its existence is a reminder of how much of the Irish archaeological landscape has been quietly erased at surface level while remaining, in a sense, written into the earth below.
